Description |
This group of six little compositions was written for Molly Stuart--my granddaughter. It began with just one piece--"Invention"—composed when Molly began to show real interest in piano. “Invention” was intended to introduce Molly to the joys of simple two-part counterpoint—as was expressed in the Bach two and three-part inventions. Yet I couldn’t resist including a little zest with time signature changes to keep things interesting.
When Molly started to mature musically, I decided to add more pieces, but during the ensuing years, Molly switched her artistic passion to vocal music--primarily choral and opera. And so, rather than write a virtuosic last movement such as a gigue or toccata, I chose instead to compose an epilogue expressing my wistfulness, and indeed a little sadness, that our artistic journey together through Molly's early exploration of music was over.
It is my hope all who discover this little group of pieces will find some moments of tranquility and joy within them.
As for Molly, I now look forward with excited anticipation discovering where her musical journey ultimately takes her--either as a professional or as an enlightened listener. May she enjoy the journey! |
